Lucia Scarabino

Dancer, actress, and instructor of Pizzica and Traditional Ritual Dances of Southern Italy.

She began her artistic journey at a very young age. A defining moment in her professional development came in 2001, when 

she met Eugenio Bennato, her first mentor. This encounter inspired her to study, research, preserve, and promote the rich 

dance and musical heritage of Southern Italian traditions.

Throughout her career, she has collaborated with numerous prestigious artists, musicians, and renowned groups in the field 

of Italian traditional music and dance.

She collaborated with fashion designer Giorgio Armani, creating a tarantella inspired dance performance for one of his fashion shows.

In 2011, she joined the dance ensemble of the Orchestra Popolare de “La Notte della Taranta”, with which she continues 

to perform. Within this prestigious artistic project, she has danced under the direction of renowned choreographers and 

artistic directors, including Roberto Castello, Fabrizio Mainini, Luciano Mattia Cannito, Massimiliano Volpini, Davide 

Bombana, Sharon Eyal, Thomas Signorelli, Irma Di Paola, Francesca Romana Di Maio, Laccio, and Fredy Franzu ti.

She has also participated in editions led by distinguished musical directors, including Ludovico Einaudi, Goran Bregović, 

Giovanni Sollima, Phil Manzanera, Carmen Consoli, Raphael Gualazzi, Andrea Mirò, Fabio Mastrangelo, Paolo Buonvino, 

Enrico Melozzi, Dardust, Fiorella Mannoia, Shablo, and David Krakauer.

With the Orchestra Popolare de “La Notte della Taranta”, she has taken part in numerous national and international tours 

and prestigious events, including DIOR CRUISE 2021, organized by the fashion house Dior in Lecce, Italy.

Alongside her dance career, she works in theatre, cinema, television, and advertising, participating in various projects 

dedicated to promoting Italian traditional dance and culture.

In 2025, she participated in the World Dance Competition, an international dance and performing arts competition organized 

by AICS, serving as a judge for the Pizzica and Folk Dance categories and as an instructor, leading masterclasses dedicated 

to Pizzica.

In 2026, she stars as a presenter and dancer in the documentary series “Una Faccia Una Razza”, produced for ERT3, the Greek 

public television channel. The series explores and celebrates the cultural heritage of Magna Graecia. Through a journey across 

Calabria and the territories of Magna Graecia, the program highlights the history, culture, traditions, archaeological heritage, 

and identity of communities connected to the Greek presence and legacy in Southern Ital.

In addition to her work as a performer, she is deeply committed to teaching. She conducts courses, workshops, and 

masterclasses 

in Traditional Ritual Dances of Southern Italy, both nationally and internationally, promoting an approach that combines 

technique, artistic expressio, and anthropological knowledge.

Awards and Recognition

2025 – Community Welfare Award (Premio WelFare di Comunità)

Presented by the Municipality of Monte Sant’Angelo in recognition of her outstanding achievements in the arts and culture 

sector and her contribution to promoting the values of inclusion, equality, and women’s empowerment.

2019 – “Re Manfredi” International Cultural Award for Dance

Presented by the Re Manfredi Foundation with the following motivation:

“For being a versatile artist who, through her talent, represents and promotes the authentic soul of Puglia around the world, 

symbolically connecting the Gargano region, of which she is a proud daughter, with Salento.”

2017 – Special Award “Ambassador of Pizzica Worldwide”

Presented by the National Association of Dance Teachers (Associazione Nazionale Maestri di Ballo) in recognition of her 

significant contribution to preserving, promoting, and spreading Pizzica dance in Italy and internationally.

2017 – San Michele Arcangelo Award

Presented by the San Michele Festival Committee of Monte Sant’Angelo with the following motivation:

“For preserving and promoting the folk traditions of the Gargano region and Puglia, both in Italy and internationally.”
